I just ordered A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia from amazon along with my Christmas shopping.
This is the book that Mike said had a big influence on Idea Channel and his life.It's $24 paperback.
Would anyone like to read along and discuss?

LETS. I've been taking a break from reading anything too seriously because that was getting me too stressed out, but this seems really interesting and I'm curious. It'd be like a proto-book club.
I only wish it existed in audiobook format ]: I found it online as PDF, I've put a request for a mobi/epub version on myanonamouse, I'll share it here once someone uploads it.

In the version I have, ISBN: 978-0-8166-1402-8, the book begins with a Forward by the translator Brian Massumi. In he talks about Philosophy in general, and the context for the book. He mentions that this book is a sequel of sorts to Anti-Oedipus by the same two authors. And this book is meant as a positive guide to their way of thinking rather than a criticism of “State Philosophy.”
“Nomad thought” is meant to be completely free. “It does not repose it’s own identity; it rises difference.”
“A Thousand Plateaus does not pretend to have the final word. The authors hope is that elements of it will stay with a certain number of its readers and will weave its way into their lives”

This is a really weird book. I've started it on my Kindle but it's going to be a very slow reading given how different his writing style is from what I'm used to. That said, it's well worth it, and it certainly influenced my thoughts on this idea. It's been a while since I've actually bought any books, but I'm considering buying this one because I'm sure as hell not going to absorb enough on my first pass. How are you liking it, Parker? edit: I finally googled Rhizome, since the first time I ran across that word I didn't have internet access and just went to the dictionary definition.  I can just say that it makes a bit more sense now, as he probably had something just as entangled in mind. This is a weird book for sure. I meant to share my thoughts here, but no one has shown interest until now.
It's divided in Plateaus which can be read in any order. I'm reading them in order so far.
The first one is about Rhizomes as opposed to plants that have roots and branches. And applying that distinction to other areas.
The second one is about shitting on Freud. Not everything is about your father, not everything is a penis, etc.

I'm still mostly at the begging of the first one and I've come to grips that I'm going to be taking my time through it. But am I glad as hell that he is shitting on Freud, this feels cathartic after having to go through conversations with my recently graduated psychologist friends. Let me know if you have more thoughts but do tell me when you got to other ones, I'm curious about what's next  |
